Like light particles ever present even in darkness  And yeast within a loaf of bread The Golden Thread is hidden in plain sight

Welcome

Welcome to a space to explore what it means to live as a spiritual being on a human journey. In the very real world of vast skies, sprawling cities, dying insects, and the ever-present need to get the washing done, there is something like a Golden Thread tugging at our consciousness, beckoning into the unknown.

Remembering that we are spiritual beings is akin to a fog lifting or awakening after a long, drowsy sleep. We spend much time seeing in a mirror dimly, perhaps a blurred reflection, longing to be seen face to face one day. To be fully known.

Spirituality can be a buzzword pointing in many directions. Let’s not constrain it with a definition, but rather refer to it as an experience. Spirituality refers to that which gives life meaning, provides a sense of belonging, and facilitates connection. Everyone has spirituality. Even neuroscientists agree that the human brain is hardwired for spiritual experience, and the World Health Organisation has added spiritual as a measure alongside physical, mental, and social well-being.

“I give you the end of a golden Thread, Wind it into a ball. It will lead you in at heaven’s gate, Wrought in Jerusalem’s wall.”

William Blake (1757-1827)

Behind the thread

Joan Wright Howie is currently in the midst of a PhD project exploring how to nurture spiritual life in organisational contexts. She is a Uniting Church minister, spiritual companion, retreat leader, and pastoral supervisor. Joan describes spirituality as an unfolding relationship with the sacred that shapes character, identity, and action. It’s not bound by religion; rather, religions evolve to nurture spirituality. In her work, Joan seeks to foster interior freedom by offering hospitality to people’s narratives and lived experiences, welcoming creative expression, dream work, focusing, and embodied awareness.

With a place on the surf coast and an apartment in Melbourne, Joan lives with her husband and their fluffy black dog, Kai. Her three kids have recently become independent, and she’s discovering a new phase of life. Joan loves swimming in the ocean, walking on the beach, tending her garden, painting, going on adventures, making things, and gazing at the stars.
